Former Captain of Russian Football Team Alexey Smertin has become an Ambassador of 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia on 1 June. Honorary certificate of an Ambassador was given to Smertin by The President of FIFA after the match between a team of volunteers and a team of politicians and show business stars. In his new position, Smertin has joined the first 2018 FIFA World Cup Ambassador – a goalkeeper of Russian National Team and Moscow team CSKA Igor Akinfeev.

"The pride of the fact that you represent your country in the internationally, can not be compared with anything else. That feeling stays with you for a lifetime, - Said Smertin, who played for Russia at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and Korea, and also was a member of National team at Euro 2004 - Therefore I am very excited to join the team of Ambassadors, in order to help to organize the best FIFA World Cup ever that would happen in our wonderful country in two years. "
